Manually update and rebuild the Exchange 2003 GAL

This how-to walks through the process of manually updating offline address books for users from Exchange 2003 as well as the Global Address List.

  1. Open Exchange System Manager
    This how-to was actually made on a WS2003STD SP2.
  2. Expand Recipients and Select “Offline Address Lists”
  3. In the right pane, right click the “Default Offline Address List” and select “Rebuild”
  4. It will give you a prompt about how long it can take
    Just click “Yes”
  5. Repeat this for the “Global Address List”
In the left pane, now click on “Recipient Update Services”
  6. In the right pane, right click on each choice, first selecting “Update Now” on both, and then again selecting “Rebuild” on both
  7. That’s all

This can take several hours though, with my 100 users it generally takes about 40 minutes max.

I would also submit that you can manually re-download the address books via Outlook by selecting the small arrow next to send/receive and then clicking on (you guessed right!) “Download Address Book”.

Backup do Exchange 2000/2003 server

One of the most important tasks for an Exchange administrator is the regular, day-by-day, backing up of all the Exchange databases. This can be easily accomplished by use of the built-in NTBACKUP.EXE software found on your Exchange 2000/2003 server.

Some administrators might choose to your 3rd-Party backup tools, such as:

However, as stated above, you do NOT need to buy expensive 3rd-Party tools just to backup your Exchange server.

Generally, you can backup Exchange 2000/2003 in 2 ways: Online backup and Offline backup.

Exchange transaction logs

The Exchange transaction logs are 5 MB files that are used to ensure database integrity. When handling the storage of transaction log files, it is best to have separate mirrored disks that are dedicated for the storage of these files. The main advantage of this is that in the event of a disk failure the other mirrored disk will contain current logs that are necessary for the operation of the Exchange database.

The transaction log files tend to grow rapidly, especially if circular logging is disabled. This uses up a lot of disk storage space. Disabling circular logging, however, has its advantages, especially in the event that any of the Exchange database becomes corrupted. To reduce buildup of these logs, perform daily backups of the Exchange database.

If the Exchange server contains one disk that handles both the transaction logs and the Exchange database, and this disk becomes full DO NOT DELETE THE TRANSACTION LOGS. Perform a full database backup that will then flush out the old log files.

Exchange Server 2003 Edition Comparison

Exchange Server 2003 comes in two editions:

Standard Edition and Enterprise Edition.

•Exchange Server 2003 Standard Edition is designed to meet the messaging and collaboration needs of small and medium corporations, and for specific messaging server roles or branch offices.

•Exchange Server 2003 Enterprise Edition, designed for large enterprise corporations, enables you to create multiple storage groups and multiple databases. Exchange Server 2003 Enterprise Edition provides a 16-terabyte message store that removes the constraints on the number of users and amount of data that a single server can manage.

Both editions feature:

•Network compression. Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 is designed for optimum network performance and features attachment and e-mail body compression, fewer round trips between server and client, and more intelligent synchronization.

•Exchange Server 2003 Management Pack. Help monitor and proactively manage deployments with the Microsoft Operations Manager Management Pack.

•Integrated support for mobile devices. Get support for Windows Mobile–enabled mobile device synchronization for e-mail, contacts, and calendars plus mobile browsing capabilities.

•Volume Shadow Copy service. Use the Volume Shadow Copy service in Microsoft Windows Server 2003 to enable improved backup and restore capabilities, thereby reducing the impact to your users and increasing system availability.

•Flexible configuration. You can configure Exchange Server 2003 as a front-end server residing in either the perimeter network (also known as DMZ, demilitarized zone, and screened subnet) or behind the firewall to support multiple client types such as Outlook 2003 (using remote procedure call [RPC] over HTTP), Microsoft Office Outlook Web Access, Outlook Mobile Access, Exchange ActiveSync, Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3), and Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP).

•Recovery Storage Group. Recover entire storage groups, databases, or individual mailboxes while minimizing impact to your users. This feature has the potential to replace the need for separate servers dedicated to recovery purposes.

Feature Standard Edition Enterprise Edition
Storage groups support 1 storage group 4 storage groups
Number of databases per storage group 1 mailbox store and 1 public folder store 5 databases
Total database size Maximum 16 gigabytes (GB) per database1 Maximum 16 terabytes, limited only by hardware2
